I had left an internal "ledge" on the inside of my hatch frames so that I could put in a screen frame sometime in the future. Well, now is the future!
I just cut the "right size" frame out of 1/4 plywood. I used velcro on the frame and the screen material so that it could be replaced easily. The problem with that is that it doesn't look very good up close. I may change that sometime.
In the past, I had screen frame that had thumb turns on 4 sides. This was always a pain because if you wanted to open the hatch you had to take the screen all the way off and then have somewhere to set it down. Instead, I put hinges on one side, and then only needed one thumb turn to hold it up. MUCH easier to swing it down to open the hatch.
I made these for all four deck hatches.
I'm not so happy with the way the black paint looks against the wood now. I may redo them at some point.
Lessons Learned
Contrary to popular belief, velcro ISN'T always the answer to everything!!!
