Hatch Trim

Summary
(please click on any of the pictures for a larger one - use the BACK button to come back)

This page describes the idiocy I went through because I didn't have enough money to buy large pieces of teak. All of the teak trim on Seaweed was done piecemeal like this. I could buy 5ft pieces of ready-made trim at the store for $40.00, or I could make my own with other peoples' ebay scraps for what amounted to $3.00 and A LOT more time.

This is how the four teak hatch trim rings were put together.

Each ring is made up of 16 separate pieces (YIKES!), which go together with epoxy. the ovals are tiny "biscuits" made from 1/8" plywood and inserted with a router groove.

I neglected to take any pictures while assembling due to the time that I needed to make up all those new words to say while I was working.....

This is the edge view of the hatch. This hatch has a flange underneath to go up into the opening, and a flange sticking out into the inside edge for a screen frame which I will add later.

An overall view.

Here is one of the small hatch trims in its final resting place....

Lessons Learned

Time spent can save you A LOT of money, but at the same time, be very trying......
