The Nimble Kodiak has a neat setup with the portside aft corner of the pilothouse. This is the area of the head.
When the head is not in use, a top is folded down flat and forms a nav table. The original setup just had a single pice of 1/2 ply for the top. Naturally, I couldn't replace it with just another piece of plywood!
This is the only "in progress" picture I took as I was building it. I routed out a channel for wiring (yes, I know it's speaker wire) to supply power to both a light in the head (on the underside) and the nav desk (on the top side). Power would enter next to one of the hinges and be (mostly) hidden.

I wanted to make an attempt at an inlay. I had never done one before and did a pretty crappy job with the exacto knife.
I just printed the pattern out from my computer actual size from an internet drawing (I had to redraw the lines in Visio).
To make it easier when (not if) I screwed up, I bedded the inlay to a piece of very thin basswood, which I would then inset into the top later. |
Here's a picture of the finished desktop.
I put a pencil holder (for calm seas!) at the top.

Here's a picture of the inside. I put a pencil/tool holder across the top and lined it with felt.

Underneat the top I put a towel holder. This works out neat because when the top is down, the towels (and whatever wet things are on there) hang down separated to air out.
They are also over the head floor which already has a shower drain.

When you flip up the top to use the head, the towels just fold up out of the way! Note the light with the hidden wiring ;)
