Canvas Snap Ideas

Summary

Here are some ideas that Lisa and I came up with on some previous boats, and we have been using them ever since.

Snap Tabs

Instead of crimping the snap through the cavas-only, sew some webbing tabs onto the canvas at the point where the snap will be.

Leave a little of the webbing strap sticking out past the edge of the canvas.

This serves two purposes. First it reinforces the fabric where the stress will be at the snap, and second, it gives you something to pull up on and causes the snap to "break away" easier (and gentler to the fabric).

O.K., so you've got these little black tabby things hanging out from all your canvas - so what?

It works!

Snap Screw Locations

In my never-ending quest to reduce the number of holes in the boat, I try to put the snaps onto a screw that already had to be there.

This doesn't work out all the time, but when it does, it saves yet another hole in the boat! Yea!

Here's one on my door hinge. Sometimes you have "modify" the screw a little. On this one, for example, I had to reduce the diameter of the screw head to get it to fit into the snap part. A couple of minutes on the 40grit belt sander and that was done!

Another example are the four snaps on the four corners of the doghouse hatch.

I used the hinges again.

Oh - and another screw head modification.
